Garden Guests and Final Girl pull a game night in opposite directions. Compare setup, player count, and mood to pick the right Van Ryder Games title.
Quick answer
Pick Garden Guests when the table wants a light strategy game that plays well with a group and keeps the mood relaxed. Pick Final Girl when you want tense solo horror play, and budget for a Core Box plus at least one Feature Film Box because the Core Box is not playable on its own. They are built for different nights, so the honest answer is to own both if your group splits between family sessions and solo sessions.
What each game asks of your table
Garden Guests is the lighter, more social end of the Van Ryder Games lineup: a light strategy game comparison against Final Girl starts with how many people are playing and how much table talk you want. Garden Guests rewards friendly competition and works as a board game for game night when players want to chat between turns.
Final Girl is a solo horror game. You are the Final Girl, and the tension comes from managing a killer's behavior while your own resources run thin. That makes it a poor fit for a loud group table and an excellent fit for one player who wants a scary, self-contained session.
The practical split: Garden Guests fills the group slot, Final Girl fills the solo slot. If your game night rotates between the two, decide before people arrive rather than mid-session.
Setup, storage, and what you actually need to buy
Final Girl's buying structure is the biggest surprise for new players. The Final Girl Core Box contains the basic rules and general components, but it is not playable by itself and requires at least one Feature Film Box. If you are comparing a family board game vs solo horror, that two-box entry is a real cost and shelf difference.
Garden Guests arrives as a complete game, so it is the simpler purchase when you want something to open and play the same evening. Final Girl rewards planning: choose a Feature Film that matches the horror you enjoy, then add the Core Box if you do not own it yet.
Storage matters too. Final Girl's Series 3 line has a dedicated storage solution, and the S3 Bonus Features Box can hold the Gruesome Death Books and Lore Book from Series 3, which keeps a growing collection from spreading across the shelf.
How to choose for a specific night
Ask three questions before you set the table. How many players? How much time do you have? How dark do you want the theme? Garden Guests answers group, medium, and light. Final Girl answers solo, variable, and dark.
For Final Girl solo play, pick your Feature Film first and treat the Core Box as the required base. For a group night, Garden Guests is the cleaner pick because it does not need a second box to function.
If you already own the Final Girl Core Box, expanding is cheap and thematic. Vehicle Pack 3 adds vehicle miniatures designed for use with the Series 3 Feature Films, which is a small upgrade that changes how a Series 3 scenario looks and plays without adding a new rules system.
Trade-offs to weigh before you buy
- Group night vs solo night: Garden Guests is built for a table of players and light strategy; Final Girl is built for one player and sustained tension. You cannot swap one for the other without changing the whole evening. Match the game to the number of people already confirmed.
- One purchase vs two: Garden Guests is playable out of the box. Final Girl requires the Core Box plus at least one Feature Film Box, so the true entry cost is higher than either box alone. If you want to play tonight with no planning, choose Garden Guests.
- Collection growth: Final Girl expands through Feature Films, Vehicle Packs, and storage like the S3 Bonus Features Box. Garden Guests stays a single, self-contained game. Choose Final Girl if you enjoy collecting and organizing a line; choose Garden Guests if you want one box that stays one box.
Product facts that affect the decision
- Final Girl Core Box: The Final Girl Core Box contains the basic rules and general components needed to play when combined with at least one Feature Film Box, and it is not playable by itself. Budget for two boxes before your first Final Girl session; Garden Guests needs only one purchase.
- Final Girl: Vehicle Pack 3: Vehicle Pack 3 includes vehicle miniatures designed for use with the Series 3 Feature Films, adding tactical options and visual detail. A worthwhile add-on only after you own a Series 3 Feature Film; it does not replace the Core Box or a Feature Film.
- Final Girl: S3 Bonus Features Box: The S3 Bonus Features Box holds a Feature Film Rulebook collecting rules from all five Series 3 Feature Films, plus five Epic Finale cards, one per Series 3 Killer, and can store the Gruesome Death Books and Lore Book from Series 3. Useful once your Series 3 collection grows, because it consolidates rules and storage instead of adding a new game.
