Compare the Hostage Negotiator Ultimate Box and Meeple Set #1. Learn which to buy first, what each includes, and how to decide based on your collection.
Quick answer
If you are new to Hostage Negotiator, buy the Ultimate Box first—it contains the base game, Crime Wave, Career, and Abductor Packs #1–#10 in one package. The Meeple Set #1 is a small upgrade for existing players who want abductor meeples for the base game and packs #1–4.
Why the Ultimate Box comes first for most players
The Ultimate Box bundles all gameplay products released separately over several years, so you get the full core experience without hunting down individual expansions. That breadth is its main advantage: you can explore different abductors and modes right away.
The trade-off is upfront cost and shelf space. At $63.99 (compared to the $99.99 list price), it is still a larger single purchase than the Meeple Set, and it takes up more room. But for anyone starting fresh, it replaces multiple separate buys.
When the Meeple Set makes sense
The Meeple Set #1 adds eight abductor meeples—three for the base game and five for Abductor Packs #1–4. It does not add new gameplay; it upgrades the physical components for those specific abductors.
If you already own the base game and early packs, the Meeple Set is a cheap way to enhance table presence. But if you are starting from zero, it will not give you a playable game on its own.
Compatibility and future-proofing
The Meeple Set is compatible with the Hostage Negotiator series, but the supplied facts only list meeples for the base game and packs #1–4. It does not cover later abductor packs or other expansions. The Ultimate Box, by contrast, includes Abductor Packs #1–#10, so it covers a wider range of content out of the box.
Key trade-offs
- Upfront cost vs. long-term value: The Ultimate Box costs $63.99 (discounted from $99.99) and replaces many separate purchases. The Meeple Set costs $10.50 (from $15.00) but only adds components for a subset of abductors. If budget is tight and you already own the base game, start with the Meeple Set; otherwise, the Ultimate Box saves money over buying everything separately.
- Content breadth vs. component upgrade: The Ultimate Box gives you all gameplay products, including Abductor Packs #1–#10. The Meeple Set only adds eight meeples for the base game and packs #1–4, with no new rules or abductors. Choose the Ultimate Box if you want more scenarios; choose the Meeple Set only if you already have those scenarios and want nicer pieces.
- Storage and shelf space: The Ultimate Box is a large collection that takes up significant shelf space. The Meeple Set is a small bag of meeples that stores easily. If space is limited, the Meeple Set is a low-footprint upgrade; but it won't replace the need for the core game.
