Learn how to integrate the Gen Con promo cards into your Detective: City of Angels games with practical steps for setup, play, and storage.
Quick answer
To use Detective City of Angels promo cards, shuffle them into the corresponding decks before setup. The Gen Con promos add one Grift and one Favor card that expand your options without changing the core rules. Just treat them like any other card of their type.
What the Gen Con Promo Cards Add
The Detective City of Angels: Gen Con Promos set includes two cards: one Grift and one Favor. These were originally available only at Gen Con 2019, so they are a special addition for fans and collectors. In play, they function as additional cards for their respective decks, offering new choices during the game. They do not introduce new mechanics or require rule changes.
When to Introduce Promo Cards
If you are new to Detective: City of Angels, play a few sessions with the base game first. This helps you understand the core deck composition and flow. Once you are comfortable, add the promo cards to see how they subtly shift decision-making. For experienced players, you can include them right away.
How to Store and Protect Promo Cards
Promo cards are often printed in limited runs and can be harder to replace. Store them in the same sleeves as your main deck to keep them protected and uniform. If you use a card storage box, keep them with the corresponding deck so you do not forget to include them. Avoid leaving them loose where they might get bent or lost.
Steps to integrate promo cards into your game
- Check card types: Identify the Grift and Favor cards from the promo set. Make sure you know which deck each belongs to. Mixing them up can cause confusion during play.
- Shuffle into decks: Before setup, shuffle each promo card into its corresponding deck. This ensures they are randomly distributed. Do not shuffle them together; they are separate card types.
- Play as normal: During the game, treat the promo cards exactly like other cards of their type. They do not have special rules. If a card seems unclear, refer to the base game rulebook.
- After the game, separate and store: Remove the promo cards from the decks and store them separately or with the base game. This prevents loss and keeps them in good condition. Using a dedicated promo card slot in your insert helps.
