The animal pens actually change how you plan your turns, since filling them with livestock gives you a second income stream to juggle alongside the saloon. My group's second playthrough felt way more strategic than the base game, and nobody wanted to stop.
The animal pen system is surprisingly deep—I spent a whole evening just figuring out the best layout for the cows and chickens, and it never once felt like a chore. The expansion adds a solid layer of management without making the original saloon feel neglected.
